THE PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL
The
Princess Margaret Hospital, is situated in Eastern St. Thomas, Jamaica,
and overlooks the Caribbean Sea, and the Bath mineral Fountain nearby. The
late Princess Margaret opened Princess Margaret Hospital on February
23, 1955. It replaced the former Morant Bay Hospital, which was
devastated by Hurricane Charlie in 1951. PMH is a Type “C “Hospital. It
is hoped to have this upgraded to type “B”. The normal bed compliment at the Hospital is 183, but this has
been reduced to 122, since the passage of Hurricane Gilbert. Services offered at PMH include:
There is also a separate Health Clinic on site. The Hospital serves a population of at least 120,000 people, which derive from Eastern Portland, Eastern St Andrew, as well as St Thomas. There is a College within the Hospital that trains Enrolled Nurses, which is run by Excelsior Community College. Hospital Staff is approximately 200. This includes Administration, Medical, Technical, Support Services and Ancillary workers. This Hospital handles about 4000 cases monthly. It has over 4000 admissions annually. Patients that normally go to local Health Centres are now seeking treatment from this Hospital, as some of the Centres are not functioning at full capacity. |
